Theory / Applications

Implications of Moral Compensation

The Hypothesis: This is a replication and extension of Moral Cleansing theory (focusing on psychological rather than physical acts). Participants in Group B (Active/Hot) will donate significantly more than Groups A or C due to the immediate, visceral need to repair their social standing.

🌍 1. Climate Change Messaging

The Risk: Inducing guilt (Hot Induction) without providing an immediate, clear way to "repair" the damage can lead to avoidance. Effective messaging must pair the guilt with a concrete restorative action.

📱 2. Misinformation Spreading

The "Correction" Effect: Users who realize they shared fake news (a public failure) often "over-correct" by becoming hyper-skeptical of all news afterwards, rejecting even true stories to protect their reputation.
